Immediately after returning to Furano, on crutches, I was honored with a wonderful event. My ikebana sensei, who is eighty-something and not stopping, organized a special Tea Ceremony for me to witness. She performed the ceremony in her home, which is also a significant honor because in this culture one's home is a very private place. Three other women, also dressed in formal kimonos, assisted. Just for me. It was a lovely welcome back to Japan, and I really treasure my time learning about traditional women's skills such as this.
My sensei spent a lot of time preparing for this, including making traditional New Year's sweets. Mochi (rice pounded into a glutonous cake) is the traditional good-luck food to eat at New Year and I savored my flower-flavored, sweet mochi.
Isn't she cute?!
