Contemptous Disrespect from Giuliani, Palin, and the RNC

Giuliani: "He worked as a community organizer, - HA, what's that? Is that a job?"

Palin: "I guess being the mayor of a small town is sortof like being a community organizer, except you have actual responsibilities!"

Tonight's speech made my blood boil. I am deeply offended by Giuliani's and Palin's condescending laughter, prompting the buffoon audience to join in despicable bullying. Since when is it acceptable to make fun of social workers? Why is community organizing not viewed as honorable, selfless service to the greater good? What about AmeriCorps, or the WPA? Why would military service be seen as more valuable than service at home, in our own troubled neighborhoods? If the Republican Party claims to encourage private contributions to social causes (with little governmental funding or support), who do they expect to do the work? Marines with machine guns? The Air Force with airdrops of supplies? Perhaps it's just as we expected: scornful millionaire big-interest-sponsored Republicans really do enjoy castigating teachers, social workers, counselors, and others in the social services industry. And the unthinking masses go along with whatever the "pro-life" candidate wants.

Since when is WAR pro-life? What about malnourished children next door? What about underfunded schools? Millions without adequate healthcare? What about other people on the planet outside of our borders? What about an ailing planet soon unable to host our grandchildren's precious lives?

Humanity belongs to an interconnected web of life, and we all must contribute, actively, to promote goodness and kindness. Blessed are the peacemakers.

From "Faithful America":

"A small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities."

When Gov. Sarah Palin made that statement in St. Paul Wednesday night, community organizers leapt into action to set the record straight. 1

They got some attention,2 but apparently not Sarah Palin's. She repeated the zinger today in Cedarburg, Wisconsin.

Many politicians simply don't understand what community organizers do. So here's a short lesson: They work in church basements, synagogues and mosques to empower their communities and make life better for millions of working people across the country.

Because community organizers have taken on these "actual responsibilities," we have them to thank for the 8-hour workday, integrated swimming pools, public transportation, health care for children and safe neighborhoods.

Some politicians may not appreciate community organizers, but we do.

Help us thank them for their work.

Your contribution will help us run ads in St. Paul and Wisconsin to let community organizers know how much we appreciate them.

We've heard from several organizers deeply offended by Ms. Palin's statements. Bishop Roy Dixon of the San Diego Organizing Project of the PICO National Network3 expressed his disappointment:

"As a life-long Republican, the comments I heard last night about community organizing crossed the line. It is one thing to question someone's experience, another to demean the work of millions of hard working Americans who take time to get involved in their communities. When people come together in my church hall to improve our community, they're building the Kingdom of God in San Diego. We see the fruits of community organizing in safer streets, new parks, and new affordable housing. It's the spirit of democracy for people to have a say and we need more of it."

Let Bishop Dixon and other community organizers know you support them.

Contribute now to run our ad thanking community organizers for their hard work.

This is not a partisan issue. Faith-based community organizing does not pit Republicans against Democrats, but rather brings people together to improve their communities.

Our faiths call us to walk humbly and work for justice, and organizers at the grassroots level do just that. It is worthy of praise, not punchlines.

Stand up for community organizers and contribute now!

Thanks for all you do,

Beth, Jennifer, Katie, Ron, Dan and Kristin
